PLANT CITY, FLA.- The Randolph softball team competed on the second day of its Spring Break trip in Florida on Monday. The WildCats defeated Aurora 5-3 in 10 innings and fell to Ohio Northern10-1 in six innings.
In the first game, The Spartans scored twice to lead 2-0 after the first inning. The WildCats picked up a run in the fourth and fifth innings to tie the game up at 2-2.
The score remained deadlocked at 2-2 for several innings as it stretched into the ninth. The 'Cats went ahead 3-2 on a Briana Harbison (Dumfries, Va./Potomac) RBI single. The Spartans countered with a run in the bottom of the ninth and the game went to 10 innings. In the top of the 10th. Nadia Tibbs (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville) singled home Taylor Craft (Altavista, Va./Altavista) and Rachel Lee (Clifton, Va./Centreville) doubled to bring Tibbs in.
With a runner placed on second base, Randolph starting pitcher Lindsey Cheney (Charlottesville, Va./The Covenant School) walked to put two on with no out. Aurora's threat ended there as Cheney picked up three straight outs to secure the win for the WIldCats.
Cheney pitched all 10 innings and gave up three runs (two earned) on eight hits. She walked three and struck out four.
Madison Brown (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest) was 2-for-5 at the plate with a double. Harbison batted 2-for-4 with a run scored and a run batted in.
Against the Polar Bears, Danielle Shannon (Greensville, Va./Riverheads) got the start in the circle for Randolph. Ohio Northern scored twice in the top of the first to lead 2-0. The WildCats scored once in the bottom portion on a Brown RBI double to make it 2-1.
Ohio Northern scored once in the third and fourth innings to up its lead to 4-1. The Polar Bears added a pair of runs in the fifth and broke the game open with four runs in the top of the sixth.
Shannon went six innings for the WildCats. She gave up five runs (four earned) on nine hits and walked two. Abbi Pannill (Prince George, Va./Prince George) came in for the last two innings and surrendered five runs (four earned) on four hits while striking out five.
Brown was 1-for-3 with a double and a RBI. Tibbs was 2-for-2.
Randolph concludes its stay in Florida with two games tomorrow. The WildCats play Worcester Polytechnic Institute at 11:15 a.m. and Muskingum at 1:15 p.m.
