NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.- The Randolph softball team wrapped up its third day of competition in South Carolina on Wednesday. The WildCats fell to Sage 13-9 and LaRoche 7-4.
In the first game, the Gators led 1-0 after the first inning. Sage would go ahead 2-0 in the top of the third. Randolph got one run back on a Brandi Pruitt (Vernon Hill, Va./Chatham) RBI single in the bottom of the inning. Sage increased its lead to 6-1 with a four-run fourth and was ahead 7-2 going into the WildCat fifth.
In the fifth, Pruitt led off with a single and then stole second. Jordyn Knapp (Woodbridge, Va./C.D. Hylton) singled her home and stole second herself. Becca Montgomery (Lancaster, S.C./E.A. Laney) singled Knapp home and Brittany Campbell (Manassas, Va./Stonewall Jackson) tripled to left field to score Montgomery. Lauren Morris (Troy, N.C./West Montgomery) hit a sacrifice fly to left to plate Campbell. Rachel Lee (Clifton, Va./Centreville) later singled to centerfield to bring in another run and the WildCats suddenly were ahead 8-7.
The lead did not last as the Gators scored twice in the sixth and added four more runs in the seventh. Randolph rallied in the seventh with three straight singles to load the bases but could only manage one run as Sage came away with the victory.
Camber Thornhill (Pearisburg, Va./Giles) got the start in the circle and went three innings. She gave up two runs on two hits and one walk. Abbi Pannill (Prince George, Va./Prince George) did not fare well as she surrendered four runs on four hits while walking three and striking out one. Morris pitched 3.2 innings with seven runs given up (six earned) on nine hits.
Campbell was 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, triple, one run scored, and one run batted in. Pruitt collected three hits and one stolen base. Courtney Lucado (Buchanan, Va./James River) was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI.
Against LaRoche, the Redhawks led 3-2 after three innings and 4-3 after five. LaRoche increased its advantage to 7-3 with a three-run seven inning. Randolph looked to come back in the bottom half. With one out, Alexis Steljes (Charlottesville, Va./Covenant School) tripled to right field. Briana Harbison (Dumfries, Va./Potomac) grounded out to second base to score Steljes. Gracyn Allen-Ingle (Mebane, N.C./Eastern Alamance) singled and was lifted for a pinch runner. Brittany Gula's (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) groundout, however, ended the WildCat rally.
Allen-Ingle went the distance for the WildCats in the circle. He gave up seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits. She walked three batters and fanned six.
Steljes had a 3-for-4 performance with one run scored. Harbison batted 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.
Randolph returns to Lynchburg to host Wilson this Saturday. The doubleheader begins at 2:00 p.m.
