BRIDGEWATER, Va.- Powered by two early first half goals, the Randolph men's soccer team used that to knock off first place Bridgewater 3-1 on Saturday afternoon on the Eagles' home turf. The win puts the WildCats' record at 4-4-3 and 3-2-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference while BC drops to 8-4 and suffers its first conference loss of the season. BC also sees its five-game winning streak come to an end.
Randolph got on the board at 14:24 when Barun Tamang (Charlottesville, Va./Charlottesville) passed to Adam Watson (Richmond, Va./Midlothian), who put the ball in to the left side of the net to give the WildCats a 1-0 lead. Two minutes later Watson would find Daniel Over (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) and he headed the ball inside near the post to give the 'Cats a 2-0 advantage. It was his first goal of the season and the second of his career. Erick Cortez-Martinez (Winston-Salem, N.C./North Forsyth) came up with two saves to keep Bridgewater off the scoresheet in the first half.
In the second half, the WildCats continued to pressure the Eagles and keep them at bay. Cortez-Martinez stopped three BC shots and two Eagle shot attempts would be blocked by Randolph defenders. It was not until the 76th minute until Bridgewater was able to get on the scoreboard and make it a 2-1 contest.
The WildCats needed to hold off the Eagles for the final 14 minutes of the game to claim victory. Cortez-Martinez picked up another save at 85:25. The 'Cats got some insurance as Gunnar Copeland (Carrolton, Va./Smithfield) tucked one into the far post a few minutes laterto seal the game for the WildCats.
Bridgewater led in total shots 15-12 and in shots on goal 7-6. Cortez-Martinez tied his season-high with six saves.
Up next for Randolph is an ODAC matchup with cross-city rival and #5 in the country Lynchburg on Wednesday night at WildCat Stadium. Game time will be at 7:00 p.m.
