LYNCHBURG, Va.- Facing what could be their fourth extra period game of the season, the Randolph men's soccer team needed some magic to prevent that from happening. Adam Watson delivered for the WildCats with a goal on a free kick with just 3:21 remaining as Randolph went on to win 2-1 over Randolph-Macon on Wednesday night at WildCat Stadium in the ODAC opener for both teams.
The victory evens the 'Cats record at 2-2-2. The Yellowjackets go to 3-3
On the stat sheet, Randolph seemingly controlled the game with seven shots coming on goal to just three for Randolph-Macon. It was R-MC that looked to have the upper hand in the first half with a 6-3 advantage in shots but the teams would be scoreless at the half. Randolph had one shot on goal, in the 27th minute by Gunnar Copeland (Carrolton, Va./Smithfield) that was saved by Yellowjacket goalie Brian Breslin.
The WildCats turned up the pressure in the second period with shots on frame. Barun Tamang (Charlottesville, Va./Charlottesville) and Daniel Over (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) both had good looks denied by Breslin. Randolph finally was able to find the right combination as Evan Keatts (Chesterfield, Va./Manchester) passed to Frankie DiOrio (Bristow, Va./Patriot) in front of the goal and DiOrio was able to kick over a sliding Breslin and in to put Randolph up 1-0.
RMC nearly had its first goal of the game in the 73rd minute as a Randolph foul was called inside the box. Austin Collier (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) denied Anthony Astruc's attempt to keep the visitors off the scoreboard. Randolph-Macon was able to get the equalizer, however, when Judge Morgan scored from the left of the net past Collier in the 79th minute.
Determined to score to prevent an extra period, the WildCats got down into Yellowjacket territory where a foul was called on RMC to grant Randolph a free kick. Watson lined up from the left side of the net as the Yellowjackets were lined up five wide. Watson curved a shot around the defensive front and into the right corner of the goal for the game-winner.
Erick Cortez-Martinez (Winston-Salem. N.C./North Forsyth) got the start in goal and he faced just one shot. Collier came in the second half and had his crucial save of the penalty kick. Breslin finished with five saves for the Jackets.
Randolph hosts Roanoke this coming Saturday at WildCat Stadium on WildCat Weekend. Game time will be at 6:30 p.m.
