FROSTBURG, Md.- The Randolph and Frostburg men's soccer teams duked it out on the field on the second day of Frostburg's Kickoff Tournament. The teams went to double overtime where Eynnar Claros (Falls Church, Va./Falls Church) was the hero for the 'Cats as he converted on a penalty kick to send Randolph home with a 1-0 victory on Sunday afternoon.
In the 105th minute, a foul was called on Frostburg near the goal which granted Randolph the penalty kick. Claros calmly kicked the ball past the outstretched arms of Bobcat goalkeeper Joel Assal for the game winner and the team flooded the field to congratulate him.
It was a battle of attrition as both teams struggled for offense throughout. Randolph had the edge in total shots 13-9 with five coming on goal compared to three for Frostburg.
The shutout was shared by WildCat keepers Erick Cortez-Martinez (Winston-Salem, N.C./North Forsyth) and Austin Collier (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory). Cortez-Martinez got the start and saw just one shot on goal that he saved. Collier came in the second half and played the rest of the way. He came away with two saves.
Evan Blow (Charlottesville, Va./Charlottesville) led the WildCats with six shots and had two on frame. Gabe Krueger (Jacksonville, N.C./White Oak) and Niles Brown (Reno, NV/Coral Academy) also registered shots on goal.
Blow and Claros were both named to the All-Tournament Team. Anthony Fonnesu (Hickory, N.C./Hickory) was the third WildCat selected.
Randolph returns to the road on Wednesday when they play at Hood College. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
