FROSTBURG, Md.- The Randolph men's soccer team started its 2018 season on the road against DeSales at the Frostburg University Kickoff Tournament. The WildCats held a 2-1 lead at the break but the Bulldogs added two goals in the second half to come out with a 3-2 victory.
DeSales struck first just over three minutes into the first half. Randolph was able to respond later in the 23rd minute as Niles Brown (Reno, NV/Coral Academy) assisted Anthony Fonnesu (Hickory, N.C./Hickory) on the score. Before halftime, Barun Tamang (Charlottesville, Va./Charlottesville) connected with Evan Blow (Charlottesville, Va./Charlottesville) for the goal and the momentum swung the WildCats' way with a 2-1 lead.
In the second half, Randolph held the Bulldogs in check early on to just one shot on goal. At 66:24, a foul was called on Randolph which granted DeSales a penalty kick. Justin Habick converted on the opportunity and the contest was knotted at 2-2.
DeSales would take the lead in the 71st minute. Randolph had three shots, all by Brown, that were blocked, saved, and wide in the final 13:40 of the second half.
Austin Collier (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) got the start in goal and made three saves while surrendering one score. Erick Cortez-Martinez (Winston-Salem, N.C./North Forsyth) came in the second half and also had three saves with two goals given up.
The teams were even in shots at 15. DeSales had nine on frame while Randolph had five. Corner kicks were at four each.
The WildCats face host Frostburg tomorrow afternoon. Game time will be at 3:30 pm.
