Men Denied by Maroons 2-1

ROANOKE, Va.- Host Roanoke scored twice in the first half and it was all that was needed as the Maroons won 2-1 over the Randolph men's soccer team on Wednesday night. Roanoke improves its record to 11-4-1 overall and 6-1 in the ODAC while the WildCats fall to 7-8 and 2-5 in the conference.

The Maroons got a pair of shots off less than two minutes into the game but starting goalkeeper Erick Cortez-Martinez (Winston-Salem, N.C./North Forsyth) was there to grab the saves. Roanoke got on the board at 14:11 as Atticus Cooke scored off a tap pass from Jose Roberston.

Roanoke struck again less than 15 minutes later as Cole Thornton scored to make it 2-0. The WildCats got on the scoreboard less than six minutes to halftime as Frankie DiOrio (Bristow, Va./Patriot) converted a penalty kick.

Cortez-Martinez came up with three saves in under 17 minutes of game time in the second half. The defense did its part the rest of the way as the Maroons did not have a shot on goal for the remainder of the game. Randolph had just one shot on goal in the second half.

Cortez-Martinez finished with eight total saves on the night. It was a season-best and also tied a career-high. Nick Tadrios had three for the Maroons.

Randolph returns to WildCat Stadium on Saturday as its hosts Bridgewater (Va.) It is also Senior Day and the team will honor its four graduating seniors. Kickoff will be at 7:00 p.m.
