LYNCHBURG, Va.- Visiting Christopher Newport netted three goals in the first half as it held a lead it would not relinquish in defeating Randolph men's soccer 4-2 on Wednesday night at WildCat Stadium. The WildCats' four-game winning streak comes to an end as they drop to 6-3. The Captains improve to 6-2.
The Captains had a pair of header shots early in the first half was high and stopped by WildCat goalkeeper Austin Collier (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory). CNU nearly had the game's first goal when Jimmy Grace's attempt hit the right post. The Captains finally struck in the 17th minute when Davis Pillow scored to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
In the 34th minute, Zachary Ballard found the back of the net to increase the CNU lead to 2-0. Less than four minutes later, Ballard helped on Jordan's Boone' score to make it 3-0.
Randolph finally got on the board in the 44th minute with some help from the Captains. On a throw in, a battle for the ball resulted in a CNU defender trying to clear but instead hitting the back of a fellow teammate and the ball flipped backwards and in for the goal to put the score at 3-1 at the half.
CNU got the goal back in the 53rd minute to increase its lead to 4-1. The WildCats halved the deficit at 69:17 as Brian Higgins (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) headed a ball in with an assist from Evan Blow (Charlottesville, Va./Charlottesville).
Collier started in the net and had one save. Erick Cortez-Martinez (Winston-Salem. N.C./North Forsyth) came in the second half and picked up a save.
Christopher Newport dominated in shots 17-3. The Captains also led 5-1 in corner kicks.
Randolph returns to ODAC play this Saturday when it travels to Ashland to play Randolph-Macon. Game time will be at 3:30 p.m.
